Who needs an operator licence?
Anyone driving a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes is required to have an operator’s licence.
Which one do I need?
This very much depends on what type of business you are going to be running. If you are transporting your own goods and services, then you will be requiring a restricted licence.
If you are transporting goods for hire or sale, then you will be needing a standard national licence.
If your company is trading internationally then you will be looking to get a standard international licence.
Asset Finance
Starting a business is a big step and no easy feat – there is a lot to consider and not least of these is the financial aspect. Getting finance can be tricky when starting out as you have no financial history to be considered. You must consider expenses! How are you to successfully start your business with limited funds and no financial history? This is usually the biggest hurdle. You may have limited or ample funds at the start of your venture, yet only high interest lenders will come to your attention because of this. This results in a challenge to get a good rate. London Transport Management can assist you with financing your first vehicle(s) at a rate which fits your operational needs, allowing you to move ahead with peace of mind knowing you are essentially able to run your business without dwindling away all your profits. London Transport Management can help by offering low competitive rates for you to hit the ground running without a costly outlay – it is expensive enough as it is!
Perhaps you already have finance on your vehicle(s) in your business? If you are already in an agreement, we can review these for you also to get you better lower rates, in turn, meaning more profit for you. A lower competitive rate would mean more income freed up for you to utilise elsewhere. Whatever your situation more savings and more profit is always worth looking into.
Public Enquiry
Not one of the nicest positions to be in and hopefully you never want to end up here. Unfortunately, though sometimes instances arise, and we find ourselves in a position where we must attend a public enquiry in front of the traffic commissioner. At London Transport Management, we can put you in touch with all the necessary bodies to assist you through the process for a hopefully favourable outcome.
Accreditations
FORS / DVSA / London Lorry Scheme / Direct Vision Standard
There are many things to consider when applying for your first licence; type of licence, finance, fleet size, maintenance to name but a few. Then there are the various accreditations to consider – there are now many companies who require certain accreditations to give you contracts. Do you drive into London? There are varying degrees of limitations on these and new permit schemes which would incur fines if you are not up to standard or aware of them, such as the newest Direct Vision Standard coming in later 2020. Are you a restricted licence holder? Do you hold a VSO certificate for your mixers? If not are you aware if you need one? We can assist in applying and getting these all for you.
FORS – a recognised accreditation scheme allowing companies to see operators are adhering to all aspects of safety, fuel efficiency, vehicle emissions and improved operations. This scheme helps operators to assess and examine their performance and change to display best practice. Although this is a voluntary scheme, some companies require it as a pre-requisite for any contractual agreements of service. It is split into 3 levels starting with Bronze – basic show of best practice and is in line with the Safer London Lorry Scheme or the London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS). Silver – a show of good practice combined with criteria laid out in FORS standard. Silver accreditation also brings your fleet in line with the Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) and TFL’s Work Related Road Risk (WRRR). Gold – this is the highest level where you demonstrate not only best practice for your own fleet but improvements through supply chains and the impact, they have on the environment also. Gold level requires you to demonstrate important advances against the standard data in Silver.
DVSA – another voluntary scheme is the DVSA earned recognition scheme. Designed for operators of all sizes, its primarily another way for operators to prove their company meets driver and vehicle standards. By regularly sharing performance information with DVSA, your vehicles are less likely to be stopped for inspections. A good thing perhaps.
