Frequently Asked Questions

This very much depends on what type of business you are going to be running. If you are transporting your own goods and services, then you will be requiring a restricted licence.

If you are transporting goods for hire or sale, then you will be needing a standard national licence.

If your company is trading internationally then you will be looking to get a standard international licence.

This depends on several aspects but generally licences are now granted in a period of 9 weeks.

Anyone who has category C or D on their driving licence must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) to drive a lorry, bus, or coach.

Operators must also have someone on their team who is CPC qualified to effectively manage their business.

It is up to you when you take the training courses if you do them within the 5-year period.  These can be done either as 7-hour modules or they can be broken down into 3.5 hour skill byte type courses – whatever suits your company and driver needs.

Fleet Operator Recognition Service (FORS) is an accreditation which shows you are always using best practice throughout your business irrespective of size.
